Welcoming Our Newest Architectural Designer: Mathew Lombardo

We’re excited to welcome Mathew Lombardo to the HDG Architects team as our newest Architectural Designer!

Mat comes to HDG with six years of design experience and a Bachelor of Architecture from Thomas Jefferson University, formerly Philadelphia University. He also minored in Building Technologies, giving him the opportunity to explore both the creative and technical sides of architecture.

His interest in design and building started at a young age. He spent his childhood building with Legos, Erector sets, and backyard forts, while his parents’ careers kept design and building present at home. In high school, a metalworking teacher encouraged him to take Architecture I–III, where he discovered an intersection between his interests in drawing, making, 3D modeling, and rendering. That experience ultimately inspired him to pursue architecture in college.

Today, Mat enjoys both visualization in the early design phases and the problem-solving that comes with developing details. He especially enjoys exploring ideas through new technology and working through complex material transitions, where individual details can have an impact across an entire project.

One of his favorite projects he has worked on is 3838 Market Street, a 12-story laboratory tower in Philadelphia. It was his first opportunity to take on a lead design role and dive deeply into façade material studies, while learning new material systems and software along the way.

The building features a mosaic façade made up of terra-cotta rainscreen panels, with each panel varying in geometry. The different shapes create an interesting play of light and shadow across the façade, resulting in a multicolored appearance that changes depending on which side of the building you’re looking at.

At HDG, Mat is looking forward to exploring a variety of project types, including K–12, workplace, and community projects, while continuing to grow as a Designer and Architect.

When he’s not designing, Mat likes to stay active with weightlifting, rowing, and rugby. He and his wife also enjoy trying new cafes and restaurants. Most recently, they celebrated at Franco’s Trattoria, where the “Franco’s Famous Fried Zucchini” lived up to its name. The meal also reminded him of his family’s former Italian restaurant in Bloomfield.

We’re excited to have Mat on board and can’t wait to see what he gets to work on with the HDG team. Welcome to HDG, Mat!
