Wilson Elementary School

HDG Architects designed a complete renovation of an existing 1970s elementary school which was in need of upgraded insulation, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, and increased natural daylighting for the West Allegheny School District. The existing school also consisted of an open-classroom layout which no longer supported the district’s elementary school curriculum needs. The school district was also looking to upgrade the facilities for their administrative offices and board room. The new design allowed the creation of new separated classrooms, a library/multimedia center, computer lab, music rooms, art room, large group instruction, cafeteria, and collaborative spaces. Renovation of the existing kitchen, gymnasium, and natatorium were also included in the scope. HDG also worked to improve the insulation of the building’s shell. One of the main goals of the project was to drastically increase the amount of natural daylight into the interior of the building. This was achieved through a well-coordinated system of skylights, borrowed lights, and exterior windows that now allow natural daylighting in every corridor and classroom. High-efficiency equipment was also utilized in the new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems throughout the school. An additional portion of the project included the new district administration offices and board room which are now housed in a building addition. Throughout the facility, new colors, materials, and added brightness create a uniquely fun and enjoyable learning environment for the students.
