HDG Architects designed a complete renovation of an existing 1970’s natatorium and an adjacent two-story building addition to house additional instructional and athletic space for the West Allegheny School District. The natatorium renovation included the expansion of the pool to add an additional two lanes, new spectator seating, locker rooms, an observation/scoring platform, a concession stand, as well as support spaces for the natatorium. The building addition included a new auxiliary gymnasium, a fitness room, JROTC classroom and associated support spaces. Improved circulation and accessibility were of high importance and the addition of a hydraulic elevator now provides access to each level within this area of the building. The new space included upgraded mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems as well as all new finishes and wall treatments to improve the overall quality of the space both aesthetically and acoustically. An additional portion of the project included a new press box at the stadium which is directly adjacent to the renovated natatorium. HDG replaced the existing one-story structure with a new two-story press box including a rooftop camera platform.
