HDG Architects designed a complete renovation of an existing 86,000 SF elementary center that was built in 1970. The existing school had outdated mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, pool insulation, and low levels of natural daylighting. The school also had an open-classroom concept which did not support the district’s current elementary school curriculum. The redesign of the existing school included new separated classrooms, a library/multimedia center, computer lab, music rooms, art room, large group instruction, cafeteria, and collaborative spaces. The existing kitchen, gymnasium, and natatorium also underwent major renovations. The installation of a well-coordinated system of new exterior windows, skylights, and clerestory windows allowed for a significant increase to the amount of daylight and a more energy efficient, well-insulated building shell. New high-efficiency mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems were also installed throughout the school. The school now utilizes natural daylighting in every corridor and classroom. New colors and materials add brightness to every space, creating a uniquely fun and enjoyable environment conducive to learning.
