HDG Welcomes New Summer Intern, Mackenzie Sorton

We would like to introduce our summer intern, Mackenzie Sorton! Mackenzie joined our team this past May and will continue with her internship throughout the summer of 2024. She will have the opportunity to work side-by-side with our licensed staff on various projects for a hands-on experience before diving back into her studies this fall.

Mackenzie graduated from Fairmont State University in 2023, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture with two Minor’s in Graphic Design Technology and Outdoor Recreation Leadership. At her undergraduate commencement ceremony, she held the honor of being the Student Speaker! Currently, she is pursuing a dual Master’s degree, M.Arch. and M.S. in Sustainable Design, at Carnegie Mellon University. Mackenzie was initially inspired to explore architecture in high school when she watched a TedTalk, called “Magical Houses, made of Bamboo,” by Elora Hardy. Originally from Morgantown, WV, she has always loved running, biking, and doing anything outdoors. She was also a two-sport athlete during her undergrad where she played tennis and ran cross-country.

HDG’s summer intern program has evolved over the years into creating a dynamic and optimal experience for a student. Having an intern provides our team with not only a fresh perspective, but a chance to mentor and guide future architects.  Characteristics that we look for in an intern include an eagerness to learn, coachable, passion and enthusiasm, a team player mentality, and a potential for growth. A month in, Mackenzie has already been involved with our on-going projects and has proved to be a valuable member of the team. Here’s to a summer filled with collaboration, discovery, and endless possibilities!
