Employee Spotlight: Leslie Gonzalez Madrid Completes AIA PGH Architecture Foundation Leadership Institute

Leslie Gonzalez Madrid recently completed the 2025-2026 AIA Pittsburgh Architecture Foundation Leadership Institute as part of a cohort of emerging professionals committed to developing leadership skills within the architecture profession and the broader community. Through the program, Leslie had the opportunity to expand her perspective beyond design and explore the role architects can play in strengthening neighborhoods, fostering connections, and supporting community-driven initiatives.

Throughout the six-month program, she participated in a series of leadership workshops focused on communication, collaboration, advocacy, personal growth, and professional development. A key component of the experience involved partnering with Hazelwood Initiative, Inc. to better understand Hazelwood’s 2nd Avenue challenges and develop tools and project ideas that responded to the real community needs. The program encouraged participants to think critically about leadership, engagement, and the social impact of design and collaboration.

The experience reinforced the importance of leadership as an essential part of architectural practice – not only through project management and technical expertise, but also through listening, relationship building, and meaningful community involvement. Collaborating with a diverse and passionate group of professionals made the experience both inspiring and rewarding.

Leslie is grateful to the AIA Pittsburgh Architecture Foundation, the program mentors, and her fellow cohort members for the opportunity to participate in such a meaningful experience. The lessons she learned and the relationships she built throughout the program will continue to influence her professional growth and future involvement in community-centered design and leadership initiatives.
